Area bartenders are eager to shake and stir local, quality products into their cocktails. When it comes to vodka, they’re giving a nod to Cardinal Sin, a small-batch vodka that St. Louis Distillery launched a few months ago.
Like many vodkas, Cardinal Sin is crisp and clean. Contrary to many unflavored vodkas, though, it has a full-bodied, almost buttery mouth feel. According to distiller Greg Deters, the artisan spirit is achieved thanks in part to the recipe (that uses a mash bill of Midwestern malted corn and northern plains barley) but also to the advanced technology of his still.
“We’re able to, with one distillation, get the heads, hearts and tails more precisely separated,” explained Deters. Through batch distillation instead of continuous distillation, he said, “Once the still does its work, […]
One of the foremost spirits tasting organizations, the Beverage Tasting Institute, confirms that Cardinal Sin Vodka is truly unique!
The institute placed Cardinal Sin in it's "exceptional" category with a rating of 90 points. Perhaps more importantly the institute noted the truly unique flavor characteristics of Cardinal Sin, describing it as "an interesting range of flavors that will work well in fall and winter cocktails, particularly with cream". They went on to describe Cardinal Sin, "Aromas suggest creme brulee, fruit danish, praline and spice with a soft, dryish light-to-medium body and a grainy, crusty raisin break, chocolate milk, and pepper nuanced finish".
We are very excited that the BTI has recognized the unique flavors and aromas we have tried very hard to carry from our high quality grain ingredients into our finished product.
July 23, 2012 (St. Louis, MO) Cardinal Sin Vodka, a local artisan spirit, received Gold Medals this past week at two international spirits competitions held in California. Both the MicroLiquor and SIP Competitions awarded Cardinal Sin Vodka a Gold Medal for taste.
The St. Louis Distillery, a local micro distillery, introduced Cardinal Sin Vodka to the St. Louis market in April this year. The distillery utilizes an artisan, micro-batch approach to distilling. This hands-on approach is the key to separating the desirable alcohols, known as the “hearts”, from the undesirable “heads” and “tails”. The St. Louis Distillery uses a unique still with an advanced structured packed column rectification technology which ensures that Cardinal Sin Vodka is rectified thousands of times versus standard stills with individual rectification plates. This is why Cardinal Sin Vodka can obtain such an outstanding flavor and character in a single rectification run!

In this business, day in and day out, I am approached with many different spirits. Some are terrible, some are good, some are great, and then there's the locally made Cardinal Sin Vodka.
Back on April 14th, 2012, I had a chance to finally meet the men behind the creation of Cardinal Sin Vodka: Steve Herberholt, Bill Schroer, & Greg Deters, and I was instantly impressed on a few key levels that let me know, this is going to be one of the greatest vodkas I have ever come across.
First off, they use only the best grains, the best "heart-cuts" from the distillation process, and the flavor is one of the most unique, extremely-smooth and delightful, that has crossed my palate in years. Hands down, this is the best vodka I have ever come across in my career because of how balanced it is on the three main points; […]
